PRAYER ยท 2 of 22
Invocation to Ahura Mazda
We begin with the Ahuna Vairya prayer, the most sacred of our Zoroastrian invocations. Ahuna Vairyo, Ushte asti, Ahura Mazda. We call upon the Wise Lord Ahura Mazda, the Amesha Spentas, and the Yazatas, to bear witness to our devotion and to guide us on the path of righteousness. Ashem Vohu, vahishtem asti, vohu manah. We invoke the divine virtues of wisdom, courage, and good thoughts. May our prayers be accepted, and may we be granted the wisdom to discern the path of Asha, the divine order. Ahura Mazda, we humbly seek your presence among us, that we may be elevated by your divine wisdom and guided by your infinite light.

RITUAL ยท 3 of 22
The Sacred Fire Ritual
As we tend the sacred fire, we offer sandalwood, a fragrant and sacred gift to the flames. The fire represents Asha, the divine spark that resides within each of us, guiding us towards truth, wisdom, and righteousness. As the flames dance and flicker, they symbolize the eternal and unchanging nature of the divine. With each offering, we reaffirm our commitment to the path of Asha, and we pray that the sacred fire may purify our intentions, and illuminate our understanding. May the divine spark within us be fanned into a flame of wisdom, compassion, and service.

Introducing the Gatha
Tonight, we turn to Yasna 30, a Gatha composed by the Prophet Zarathustra over 3000 years ago. These sacred verses, imbued with the wisdom of the ages, continue to guide us on our spiritual journey. In a world torn apart by conflict and division, these ancient words remind us of the fundamental choice that lies at the heart of human existence: the choice between the forces of good and evil, between the paths of light and darkness. As we recite these verses, we connect with the timeless wisdom of the Prophet, and we reaffirm our commitment to the values of Haurvatat and Ameretat, the divine virtues of wholeness and immortality.

GATHA ยท 5 of 22
Sacred Verses โ€” Part I
Then came the two spirits, the Twin-Born, and their concepts, the good and the evil. Of these two, the one who chose the good, I declare to you, O Mazda, to be Asha. The other, the most destructive, chose evil. Between these two, the Wise Lord did not hesitate, but with complete knowledge, He chose the good. The Twin-Born spirits, with their concepts, did not confuse Him. When the two spirits clashed, the good and the evil, the pure and the destructive, the sacred and the profane, the One who chose the good did not waver. He chose Asha, the divine order, and with it, He created the universe.

Sacred Verses โ€” Part II
The evil spirit, Angra Mainyu, chose darkness and chaos, and with it, He sought to destroy the creation. But Ahura Mazda, the Wise Lord, countered with the power of Asha, and created Haurvatat and Ameretat, the divine virtues of wholeness and immortality. These virtues are the source of all life, and the foundation of the universe. They are the guiding principles of the cosmos, and the guardians of the divine order. Through them, we may attain spiritual wholeness, and participate in the eternal and infinite nature of the divine.

Understanding the Gatha
These verses reveal the fundamental conflict between the forces of good and evil, between the paths of light and darkness. The Twin-Born spirits represent the dual nature of the universe, and the choice that lies at the heart of human existence. Asha, the divine order, is the guiding principle of the cosmos, and the source of all life. Haurvatat and Ameretat, the divine virtues of wholeness and immortality, are the foundation of the universe, and the guardians of the divine order. Through these virtues, we may attain spiritual wholeness, and participate in the eternal and infinite nature of the divine. As we reflect on these ancient words, we are reminded of the importance of choosing the path of Asha, and of cultivating the divine virtues of Haurvatat and Ameretat in our daily lives.

Teaching: Haurvatat and Ameretat
In Yasna 30, we find the pivotal teaching on the Two Spirits, a fundamental concept in Zoroastrian theology. The Two Spirits are Spenta Mainyu, the beneficent spirit, and Angra Mainyu, the destructive spirit. Haurvatat (wholeness) and Ameretat (immortality) are divine virtues that arise from the harmonious union of Spenta Mainyu with Ahura Mazda. These twin principles represent the ultimate goal of human existence: to attain wholeness and immortality by aligning with Asha, the divine order, and Vohu Manah, the divine wisdom. By choosing to follow Spenta Mainyu, we opt for a path of righteousness, wisdom, and life-affirmation.

The Amesha Spentas
The Amesha Spentas, divine beings emanating from Ahura Mazda, play a crucial role in the attainment of Haurvatat and Ameretat. Specifically, Haurvatat is associated with the Amesha Spenta Ardvi Sura Anahita, representing the virtues of devotion, purity, and fertility. Ameretat, on the other hand, is linked to the Amesha Spenta Rasman, symbolizing the celestial order and the dynamism of life. By cultivating these virtues and aligning with the Amesha Spentas, we participate in the cosmic struggle between good and evil, furthering the cause of Spenta Mainyu and Ahura Mazda.

Recognizing Druj
Druj, the Lie, represents a fundamental threat to the cosmic order. In modern times, Druj manifests in various forms, including deceit, manipulation, and the distortion of truth. We must remain vigilant and recognize the subtle ways in which Druj can infiltrate our thoughts, words, and actions. To resist Druj, one must cultivate discernment, critically evaluating information and motivations. By choosing to embody the virtues of Haurvatat and Ameretat, we strengthen our inner resolve and become beacons of truth in a world fraught with deception.

STORY ยท 12 of 22
A Story from Tradition
In the Shah-nameh, the epic tale of Rustam and the White Demon, we find a vivid illustration of the struggle between good and evil. Rustam, embodying the values of courage, loyalty, and righteousness, confronts the destructive forces of the White Demon, a symbol of Angra Mainyu. Through Rustam's triumph, we see the power of human courage and the divine virtues in overcoming adversity. This story serves as a reminder that, like Rustam, we must confront the forces of Druj and choose to align with the divine order, upholding the values of Haurvatat and Ameretat.

The Cosmic Order
The cosmic order, governed by Asha, is characterized by the eternal struggle between good and evil. As individuals, we possess free will, enabling us to choose between the paths of Spenta Mainyu and Angra Mainyu. The triumph of good over evil is assured, but it requires our active participation. By embracing the virtues of Haurvatat and Ameretat, we contribute to the realization of the cosmic order, upholding the divine plan and hastening the ultimate victory of good. Through our choices, we become co-creators, working in harmony with Ahura Mazda to bring about a world of peace, justice, and harmony.
